We thought it was like summer camp here, and you all were chilling in a safe, clean school. Then, we get here and it’s like one big battlefield, you guys all hate each other, the whole place is trashed! I mean, what the hell happened, how did it get like this?
Gates in Quarantine – The Saints

The Saints is the second installment in the very dark Quarantine series. It picks up right where the previous book The Loners left off. McKinley High is still under military quarantine after a virus outbreak 18 months ago. The school drowns in chaos, it seems to be like a huge battleground. When the doors finally open, Will and Lucy think that the nightmare is over. They have no idea that even worse things are yet to come. A new gang enters the school headed by the charismatic Gates. This new group, nicknamed The Saints, according to their private school they went to before, almost immediately gains popularity among the other students. They turn the school’s former hierarchy upside down whereas the gang of The Loners falls apart. The Loners one by one scatter to all different gangs. Will finally ends up with The Saints. At first this seems to be a lucky opportunity for him to regain his social status but soon he has to fight harder than ever to survive.

The first book in the series The Loners was dark but this one tops it. Don’t expect fast-paced action sequences. This book thrills you and gives you the creeps on a totally different level. Will and Lucy but also Gates go through tremendous changes during the course of the story – not always for the better…

I don’t want to spoil the story – just this much: one character gets totally unhinged and this person’s actions are more and more disturbing and spine-chilling.

The Quarantine series is a story about growing up under exceptionally awful circumstances: it tells about leaders and opportunists, striving for power and hiding under the radar, excessive partying and thrillseeking, lust, jealousy and brutal revenge. The isolation in the school without any adults in charge seems to bring about the kids’ worst and/or unexpected character traits.

The Saints is a fairly bloody story, not necessarily adequate for the faint-hearted, but it’s definitely an interesting and thrilling read about a community out of control. The novel ends with an evil cliffhanger that leaves enough room for speculation what might happen in the next installment. Will there be hope for rescue? I’m looking forward to the next events in Will’s and Lucy’s life. Fans of the Gone series or Lord of the Flies will probably devour the Quarantine series, too.
