Insurgent. Noun. A person who acts in opposition to the established authority, who is not necessarily regarded as a belligerent.
Insurgent, p. 458

The beginning of Insurgent picks up right where Divergent left off. Tris’s initiation day is over, but it wasn’t marked with celebration and victory with her chosen faction, instead the day ended in violence and horror.

Together with Four (Tobias) and a small group of their friends, she has escaped the simulation that killed innumerable people, but their fight is far from over. They try to find a temporary shelter at Amity to hide from Erudite and the Dauntless traitors, to tell the other factions about the war against Abnegation and to team up to fight Erudite. Unfortunately, they gain no support from any of the factions. Instead, the conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows and a possible war looms.

Tris isn’t the same girl anymore as before her initiation day:
She grieves for her murdered parents and can’t fight her feelings of guilt for murdering one of her best friends while he was under the simulation.
She is tired of being Tris, that she has done bad things she can’t take back and which are part of her now.
She doesn’t know if she still wants to live and becomes more and more reckless, sometimes senselessly risking her life.

In spite of this depressing burden, Tris has to move on, because she learns that the Abnegation and with them her parents have died for a reason. The Abnegation leaders planned to out a big secret to the population that Erudite wanted to hide at any price. Now, Tris needs to know about this secret, the reason for all the horrible deaths and of course she plans to finish what her parents and former faction started.

Tris has to form unexpected alliances and face deception and betrayal in order to achieve her targets. But in the end she also has to face the possibility that all the risks she took and all the sacrifices she made – her relationship with Tobias, her friends‘ and family’s lives – were for nothing.

It took me a while to come to a concluding rating of Insurgent because I finished the book with mixed emotions. The plot was complex and unpredictable and tons of sub-plots made the story fascinating but also sometimes confusing. A lot of things happen but the most important thing is revealed in the final chapters – the typical middle-book of a series. Some actions and decisions are questionable and not very realistic. Yet, I really enjoyed the book and recommend it to all fans of Divergent. Due to the mentioned minor flaws I rate Insurgent with only four stars and hope for an excellent sequel.

I’m surprised, that review is in English! And I just can say: WOW! It’s a really good idea, ‘cause it makes it all international! And when I think about it: for an English book belongs an English review! 😀

    Warm regards
