Excerpt: I have more online contacts than I can count. I make about one hundred connections a day. I have access to millions of people. I used to think that I had friends in these numbers. But these virtuals friends are like stars stretched out in the sky. They’re out there, they exist, and I can imagine what they’re like, but we’ll never meet.

Imagine you live in the year 2060. You are constantly „plugged in“ – all socializing, school, work – everything is done digitally. You don’t have to leave your home. You have millions of „friends“, because you can create your own interesting online identity that is of course beautiful, intelligent and popular.

This is Madeline’s life. She is the daughter of the creator of Digital School which all students have to attend. He created this online school to keep students safe after series of school shootings, suicides and teenage pregnancies. With this kind of home schooling, parents can be assured of their children’s safety.

Madeline is 17 and she seems to be ok with this life, but then she meets Justin in a chatroom and he invites her to meet him in a real tutoring class in real life. Justin awakens Madeline: she falls in love with him and he teaches her the advantages of an „unplugged life“, shows her music clubs and helps her to make „real“ friends. But do these people really want to be Madeline’s friends? She learns that they are rebels who fight against her father’s Digital School. Do they only want to use her? Madeline doesn’t only have to choose between „online life“ and „real life“ but also between her family and her new love and friends.

I liked this book, the idea of a digitalized life is pretty scaring but realistic. The writing is really fast-paced and descriptive and the characters and their positions and characteristics are not only black or white. Very good book!
