This is the first part of a planned trilogy. The story is narrated by Beatrice Prior, a 16-year-old girl who lives in Chicago in the far future. This city is cut off from the outside, nobody knows what it looks like on the other side of the borders.

The people of this city is divided into five factions:

Abnegation – those who are extremely selfless and help everybody
Amity – those who live in peace with everybody and are always friendly
Candor – those who never lie
Dauntless – those who have no fears and fight for safety
Erudite – those who are wise and can never have enough knowledge.

When you are sixteen you have to choose about the rest of your life: if you want to stay with your family or to change faction.

Beatrice and her family live in Abnegation, but she never really thinks she belongs there. There is always a test to make your choice easier, to find the faction you belong to. But Beatrice’s result is that she can go to several factions, which means that she is Divergent. Because of her uneasiness at Abnegation she chooses to be Dauntless. Now she has to pass a certain initiation where only the best, the real Dauntless remain. Beatrice, now Tris, has to learn how to fight and how to control her fears.

But finishing her initiation isn’t her only worry: The Erudite plan a war against Abnegation to gain power. They have developed a serum which controls every Dauntless person and forces them to kill Abnegation. Only the Divergent are not affected by this serum so it is up to Tris to stop the war and save her family and the rest of the faction.

I really liked this book because it was very exciting, you could never foresee what would happen next and the story was narrated interestingly. I can only recommend “Divergent”!!!!
